Oscar night is soon approaching…Here is one classic movie, of the many I will be recommending you rent or buy.

The Heiress (1949) Olivia de Havilland won an Oscar for her portrayal of a plain spinster romanced by a handsome but poor young man (Montgomery Clift) her emotionally abusive father believes to be an unscrupulous fortune hunter eyeing the money de Havilland inherited after her mother died. William Wyler’s adaptation of Henry James’ novel “Washington Square” also stars Ralph Richardson, and Miriam Hopkins.

I once heard on TCM that Olivia didn’t particularly care for Clift during the filming of this movie. She found him to be aloof which made the love scenes quite difficult. They sure fooled me. This is a must have. Olivia plays this role smoothly and believably–she deserved the Oscar that year for sure!
