When was the last time you watched a good old silent movie? I have posted a couple reviews on films like “Noferatu,” and ” Lady of The Night.” Before you say, No thanks, that’s not for me, I ask, no I will nag you until you do, to give these gems a chance. Unlike Hollywood today, actors in silent film were exactly that, “actors.” There were no bells and whistles we have today, they had to act to make the audience feel and hear the words that were being spoken. I think there are directors that think as I do because one has just made a new film with a silent era twist.

I came across this review on a new film titled “Brand Upon A Brain!” Curious title… The movie is directed by Guy Maddin. Maddin uses effects of the silent era and “embraces the melodramatic aesthetics of German expressionist classics” in this story of a man who revisits his childhood home, sorta like a walk down memory lane. Its more like a run down memory lane. In this memory lane orphan children, and a insane scientist come together. According to this review it has all the “beauty of black and white silent film but with modern sensibility.”

Visit the film’s official website for more information and view the trailer at http://branduponthebrain.com/ and also read this review on it at the Berkeley Daily Planet.
